Week 4 ~ Language arts

We finished up with our language arts this week.
Matthew continued learning letters and their sounds.
We practiced more alliteration and finished up our story of the Prince.

The last letters were
F (fawn)
B (bear)
U (golden star)
and
R (Rapunzel - Grimm)

Here is some of his work...

He wrote out all the letters we learned and went over all of their sound.

Next we did a lot more painting.  We approached this week with the actual lesson that Steiner suggested for the first lesson.  He gave the example of using green and blue then, yellow and blue and stating how the first was O.K. but the later was beautiful.

Next we let the colors play at the park together!
Once I got them started on this they just rolled with it.
They made up amazing stories about the colors.  I was
all prepared to do that, but it was out of my hands and
they had so much fun imagining.

Tillie danced on the paper too during drying time :)

We got the yarn on his needles this week too!
He was a little frustrated.  He kept trying though.
We used a beautiful story from our curriculum and the following
mantra to remember the steps.

In through the front door
Run around the back
Peek through the window
Off jumps jack

It really helped to have this story.

He didn't finish a project yet, but we are still going to work at it.

We also had fun this week taking huge hikes down to the river.

I just love how much time we get to spend outside.
It is were we are all the happiest!

All of our hens are laying now!
we are getting 8 eggs a day.

This week we made chicken noodle soup and I showed the kiddos
how to make home made egg noodles.

If anyone would like to share in our bounty let me know :)

Next week is nature week and we are focusing on Halloween!

We started out this week by visiting
Hugo animal farm.  We went to learn about sheep and
their wool.  We found lots of other animals too.

Here is a bag of recently sheared wool.

Matthew got an opportunity to milk a goat!

Now, they want a kitty!!!

We learned more about wool for our on going handwork projects.

We then made our own knitting needles.

Matthew sanded and sanded

then we painted knobs for the ends.

Next week we will attempt our first knitted project!

For language arts this week we continued on with...

V (Village)
T (Tree)
S (Six swans~Grimm)
A (Golden star)

We are mainly painting what we see around us now.

Week 2 - Language arts

This week began and ended with these pumpkin muffins.

I was introduced to these fabulous muffins from a very dear friend.
I crave them every year now when I see those beautiful orange pumpkins.

Thank you Amy for all your advise and inspiration!

We did most of our school outdoors this week!
It was so gorgeous I could not resist.

First we learned...
M (Mountain)
D (Door)
E (golden star)

We practiced alliteration
with our new letters
and writing them out.

Then, we learned
H (Mother Hulda - Grimm)
L (lavender lady)

He also practiced more recorder.
This time he was very frustrated and we sort of had to
take a little break from music.

we did more finger knitting and he has almost
finished his first project!!

two more weeks of language arts.

Week 1 ~ Language Arts

Now is when we begin our language arts block.
It lasts four weeks.  In that time I will introduce letters.
All of which are brought to him through...
fairy tales.  :)

We started this week with our morning walk to fairy falls.

This is a nice hiking place near our house that sounded appropriate.

Then, I introduced our stories beginning with
Q (a queen)
K (a king)
P (a prince)
and
W ( the wise woman)

I told stories about the new characters.
Then, we practiced alliteration.

Matthew has enjoyed playing a new game where he
tries to guess what the word starts with by the sound it makes.

We practiced writing our new letters.

after a few days I used these new letters and stories to introduce two more
consonants and one vowel.

G ( golden goose - Grimm)
J ( the jester)
O ( the star vowel)

We drew our new letters and practiced sounding them out again.

In addition to our letter intro.
we also continued with our recorder practice.

He already can count beats, read the notes and fingers A and B.
Hopefully we will learn a song by the end of next week.

we continued on with knitting prep as well.

I read to the children the story of
Pelle's New Suit by Elsa Beskow.

The best story ever for explaining where wool comes from.

Matthew took a class this week at the Como Zoo.

It was a class for home schooled kids.
This particular class was about prairie seeds.
they went out in nature to find seeds and make seed balls
to take home and plant.
He had a lot of fun.
I like when he gets a little chance to have a
different teacher other than me occasionally.

~SUPER WESLEY~

While he was in class the other kiddos and I ran around the zoo.

We finished the week looking for signs of autumn.
We took a walk and brought home our evidence.

Then, we collected sumac berries

Delicious!

Next week we will continue with Language arts,
recorder, and knitting.

Until then~
