Back to school

We started our new year.
Matthew is beginning his second year and Wesley is
beginning Kindergarten.

This year began with a bang!

My brother in law lives in Denver and had his wedding the
second week of school.  So, we turned into a field trip :)

We spent our first week talking about geology.
We talked about rocks and mountains.
I read the kids stories of a gnome named pebble who travels
to the mountains for the first time.
We took magnets and went to a dry river bed to see magnetic rocks.
We wrote out our Colorado words and played Colorado bingo.

We felt ready for our big adventure!!!

Then, the RV came ready to roll us to Colorado.

Grandma Judy and Aunt Burp came along for the ride.
They were immensely helpful.  The kids recorded all the sights
on our way there.   We learned a little about Iowa and Nebraska.
We followed along on our map.  After the wedding we headed straight
for the mountains.

We drove up and stayed in the beautiful town of
Estes Park.  We then traveled to Rocky Mountain National park.
We went up into the mountains and we saw unique wild life, but

Matthew really wanted to experience the heights of the mountains.
I thought this was good enough

they got to hike around  a little

He wanted to go higher!

Not until we were in the clouds was he fully satisfied!

I was very nervous.
Matthew loved it.

We hiked more on our way back down.

Looking back to where we were...

When we were there the elk were in rut.
We saw a lot of
these guys up close.

Amazing

From Colorado we traveled to the Black Hills, SD

Once we arrived in Custer National Park we really saw wild life.
Coyotes, antelope, buffalo, prairie dogs, turkey and wild donkey.

Feeding the donkey
We really enjoyed the park we could have stayed a
week.  I wish we could have stayed longer everywhere we were.
Although, we moved on still to
the Badlands next.

To my surprise Matthew said he enjoyed the Badlands the
best of all.  We definitely need to go back and have more time for
exploring.
I think the kids had a great time and we all learned something along the way.
